Hosea 2:14-20 (Living Bible)
14 “But I will court her again and bring her into the wilderness, and I will speak to her tenderly there. 15 There I will give back her vineyards to her and transform her Valley of Troubles into a Door of Hope. She will respond to me there, singing with joy as in days long ago in her youth after I had freed her from captivity in Egypt. 16 “In that coming day,” says the Lord, “she will call me ‘My Husband’ instead of ‘My Master.’[a] 17 O Israel, I will cause you to forget your idols, and their names will not be spoken anymore. 18 “At that time I will make a treaty between you and the wild animals, birds, and snakes, not to fear each other anymore; and I will destroy all weapons, and all wars will end.“Then you will lie down in peace and safety, unafraid; 19 and I will bind you to me forever with chains of righteousness and justice and love and mercy. 20 I will betroth you to me in faithfulness and love, and you will really know me then as you never have before.
God instructed Hosea, the writer of this passage, to marry Gomer who would be unfaithful to Hosea and take many lovers just as a whore would. We might ask, “Why would God place such a burden on one of his prophets?” Why, indeed?
The people of Israel had sinned against God just as an adulterous whoring wife sins against her husband. So, God had used this one-sided, adulterous marriage for His purposes; to show the Israelites the radical depravity and sinfulness of their actions against God by worshiping idols.
But then, God wooed the people back into his intended love relationship. His rescue and redemption renewed his betrothal with his people. Such love. Do we know a love such as this from any human? I think not. The depth of God’s love in this situation is an objective lesson for me like many other events in the Bible. For this reason, I love God as my husband in a completely different way from the way I love my earthly husband and I have replaced my earthly father with my Father in heaven.
I feel this verse down deep into myself for our country right now. That God will restore us and transform our “Valley of Troubles into a Door of Hope.”
