I am not a women’s libber. I am not a feminist with an agenda. On the other hand, I am a woman who has received and seen verbal abuse of women for all my life … you know … name calling.
When I wet the bed later in life than most toddlers, my name was changed to “Stinky” by my dad. When, at nine years old, I expressed the desire to become an architect, I was told, “You can’t be an architect, you’re too stupid, women can’t be architects.” When I came home with a D on my ninth-grade report card, I was told, “Well you’re just a dumbbell like me.” Quite obviously, my father had severe mental issues despite being a successful man in the steel business. Of course, and because of those very issues, he never sought help.
Then in my adult years, verbal abuse became a norm in my two failed previous marriages. Then in one of my jobs I was asked by my boss to go to a hotel with him … repeatedly. I finally had to quit my job. And — I did nothing.
No sympathy, please …
My point is this: the “Old Boys Network” has thrived since I was a kid and continues to this day. So, when I watched Ocasio-Cortez speak in the House of Representatives, it brought back memories, but more importantly, I applauded her then, and I continue to applaud her. “It’s about time,” I thought.
“… she and other Democrats assailed a sexist culture of ‘accepting violence and violent language against women’ whose adherents include President Donald Trump.” Furthermore, she called a spade a spade, when she said it isn’t just one incident, ‘It is cultural. It is a culture of lack of impunity, of accepting violence and violent language against women, an entire structure of power that supports that,’” she said.
The “structure of power” culture that some men use to control their women is unacceptable. However, in fairness, we women should follow the example of Ocasio-Cortez and speak up.
Women! Speak up. Don’t be afraid like I was. We have an abundance of intellect, intuition, and the innate ability to see things clearly and make a difference in people’s lives, especially when we have a love relationship with God.
