Living Bible Translation
Representatives of all the tribes of Israel now came to David at Hebron and gave him their pledge of loyalty.
“We are your blood brothers,” they said. “And even when Saul was our king you were our real leader. The Lord has said that you should be the shepherd and leader of his people.”
David, a mere shepherd, was used by God to dethrone his predecessor, Saul, whom I find myself comparing to President Trump, a liar, cruel, unforgiving, expecting constant praise from the people, and separated from God. David, on the other hand, was kind, forgiving, courageous, and was at peace with God; so, God called David a “man after my own heart.”
However, the most important aspect of David’s life is that his kingship was eternal because Jesus’s ancestry comes directly from David:
“These are the ancestors of Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David and of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac; Isaac was the father of Jacob; Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers … Jacob was the father of Joseph (who was the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ the Messiah. These are fourteen of the generations from Abraham to King David; and fourteen from King David’s time to the exile; and fourteen from the exile to Christ.” (Matthew 1:1-17 Living Bible)
